José Luis Bravo

 

Jose Luis Bravo is an artist and freelance editor specializing in photography and digital media. He holds a degree in Design for Graphic Communication from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana in Mexico City. He also studied photography and has a diploma in Museology from Mexico’s Fine Arts Institute.

In 2003 he moved to Barcelona, where he completed a Master’s degree in Interactive System Creation and Design and in 2004 a Master’s degree in Curatorial and Cultural Practices in Art and New Media, both in MECAD \ Media Centre d’Art i Disseny.

In 2010, he received a Master´s degree in Artistic Production and Research from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Universitat de Barcelona as a part of pre-doctoral studies. He is currently attending the PhD program in Modern and Contemporary Art at Universitat de Barcelona and working on his PhD thesis “Expanded photography: The presence of photography in artistic practices related to the use of digital technology and new media (1980-2011)” under the supervision of Dra. Anna Maria Guash Ferrer.

Since the beginning of the nineties his work has focused on the use of digital technologies in the field of art and culture; on creating, editing and publishing photographic projects; and on the useof the Internet as a creative medium. He has also work for several art centers and institutions, including the Centro Multimedia del CentroNacional de las Artes, the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, the International Council of Museums and zonezero.com.

He has exhibited his work at the Centro de la Imagen de la Ciudad de México, the Arte x Arte Foundation in Buenos Aires, the CCCB and the Loop Video Festival in Barcelona and in several private galleries. It has also been published in specialized photography and contemporary art magazines and in books about art and new media.

Public and private institutions such as Fundación-Colección Jumex, Fondo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes, Secretaría de Educación Pública de México, MECAD and the Universitat de Barcelona have sponsored Bravo.

He teaches on the creation and production of artistic projects, photo editing, construction and interpretation of images, electronic publishing and art history. In Mexico, he has taught at the Universidad Iberoamericana, the NationalUniversity of Mexico, the Instituto Latinoamericano de la Comunicación Educativa and the Instituto Nacional de BellasArtes. He is currently a professor on the Master’s Degree in Digital Arts at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, and teaches at the Institut Superior de Disseny i Escola de la Imatge and at GrisArt Escola Superior de Fotografia in Barcelona. As a freelancer, he designs and teaches seminars, workshops and courses.
